Updates On The Court System In New Jersey

As mask mandates and capacity limits in restaurants and stores end, court operations in the courthouse will resume at a 50% level on June 15th, 2021. Jury trials, primarily in criminal cases, will also begin in person on June 15th. These are the biggest changes to take place in the New Jersey court system since the start of the pandemic.

How Are Case Backlogs Being Handled?

Almost 200,000 landlord-tenant cases are back-logged. The Governor and the Legislature will have to fill the large number of judicial vacancies to help meet that backlog. Most DWI cases are still being resolved virtually and are not as backlogged as landlord-tenant cases. In person trials are being scheduled from time to time, are still infrequent, but the pace is picking up as things return to normal.
